Dean and Justine Cartwright came from 15 years in the pub and club trade. After coming out of pubs we were looking at an avenue
to stay within the industry without the evening commitment due to having 4 kids. We looked into brewing and after a year of research bought our brew kit. Dean's backgroung in catering, attending Birmingham college of food, studying baking and food science. Justine's background is in finance with over 25 years in banking and finance.
We found our first brew kit on Ebay on Boxing day, Brewmeister in Keith Aberdeen were upscaling theirs. Brewmeister are known for brewing the worlds strongest beer. Dean went to Keith for a week to see the kit in action and bring it back to the Black Country.
The Set Up
Although we had the kit we sat in it from January to June allowing us to put everything in place. We bought a 70ltr test brew kit and started brewing on a small scale until December 2014
The First Big Brew
After fitting out the brewery in Brierley Hill, we did our first brew... then another and another and another, all of which went down the drain. By the 8th 'big brew' we had beers to be proud of.
We entered into the stourbridge beer festival with three beers, Blonde, APA and Best Bitter all of which sold out, but our blonde went down a treat and was sold out by day 2.
Building a Future
Tim Hibbert came on board as a trainee brewer 2 days a week and Pete Walker is also a key player in the brewery who has been involved since the very beginning and now handles the sales and marketing team as a director.
Between myself, Justine, Pete, Ruth and Tim we have a dream that has become a reality. We want to build a brand that is with quality and recognised throughout the Black Country and UK.
We would like to grow and enable all of us to work on the business so we can bring employment to our beloved Black Country.
We are all at the brewery Black Country born and bred, with our ancestry going back since records were med. From Amblecote, Dudley, Stourbridge n' Coley Gate we're brewing our beer cos it makes us feel great.
Now pig Iron Brewing may be unknown and small, but with our Black Country roots we'll take on em all. So all yow Black Country women and men, have a sup of our ale, an tell us ow its bin.
